waterfront pathway, trees and river

Dear Residents;

A healthy tree canopy is essential to a healthy community. Our tree canopy helps to provide clean air, prevent soil erosion, provide habitat for a diverse range of species, and contributes to our beautiful rural and urban landscape. With a full cost funding grant from the Ministry of Natural Resources for Municipal Debris Cleanup and Forest Regeneration, Edwardsburgh Cardinal is fostering a healthy tree canopy at our Legion Way waterfront.

To ensure precision and expertise we have entered into a forestry services agreement with South Nation Conservation Authority. Using the services of professional arborists who have prepared a comprehensive work plan that included site visits, identifying new planting locations, securing appropriate new tree stock and supervision of the planting contractor. Ultimately this plan recommends the removal of 16 trees that are old and dying (13 Ash, 1 Manitoba Maple, 2 Hard Maple). Removal of these trees will improve the overall safety in the area and create space for new young trees to thrive and flourish. Recognizing the importance of our tree canopy we will be replacing the 16 trees with 25 new trees. These trees will consist of Red Maple, Oak, Hackberry, Glenleven and Mountain Ash. If you have been there recently you may have noticed the new additions are already there and what remains is the removal of the identified trees.

The dedicated team is working diligently to complete the project by December 15th. Every step is meticulously planned, including the full cleanup of trees after removal and stump grinding for a seamless finish. There are a few stumps that will remain, as recommended for soil erosion control and bank stability. We understand the importance of preserving our natural environment while creating an inviting space for residents and visitors alike.

Get ready to witness an incredible transformation at Legion Way waterfront as we remove obstacles and pave the way for fresh beginnings. Together, let’s celebrate nature's resilience as we plant new trees, cultivate our green spaces, and nurture a community-driven approach towards conservation, regeneration and growth in our waterfront area.

Sincerely,

Tory Deschamps
