Be Aware of Phishing Scam
Public Notice:
Scammers use email and/or text messages to try to steal your passwords, account numbers etc. They often update their tactics to keep with the latest news, such as municipal elections and candidates information, but here are some common tactics used in phishing emails or text messages:
Phishing emails/texts often tell a story to trick you into clicking on a link or opening an attachment. You might get an unexpected email or text that looks like it’s from someone you know or trust. They may:
- say they’ve noticed some suspicious activity or log-in attempts – they haven’t
- claim there’s a problem with your account – there isn’t
- claim you need to confirm some personal information – you don’t
Signs that an email is a scam:
- Email has a generic greeting
- Email says that your account is on hold
- Invites you to click on a link to update information or make a payment.
While the municipality or candidates may communicate with you by email, neither will email or text with a link to update your payment information. Phishing emails can often have real consequences for people who give scammers their information.
