This information was shared shared with the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal as part of South Nation Conservation's Flood Forecasting and Warning program. This message is an update to the water safety statement issued August 8, 2024. 

Weather forecast

Widespread showers with embedded thunderstorms are expected across much of the South Nation Conservation jurisdiction today as the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Debby cross the region. Rainfall amounts of 50 to 80 mm are being forecasted, with the potential for localized rainfall exceeding amounts of 100 mm.

Environmental conditions

Water levels and flows are currently normal for this time of year in the SNC jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario. The anticipated rainfall received today and continuing into Saturday morning may result in increased water levels and flows in rivers.

Risks

All rivers and streams across the jurisdiction may experience higher water levels, fast flowing water and slippery or unstable banks. There is potential for flooding in urban, low-lying, and poor drainage areas due to the intensity of rainfall that could be received.

Action

Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution and to stay away from rivers as the forecasted weather may rapidly increase river flows and banks may be slippery. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.

Residents in flood prone or low-lying areas should monitor weather forecasts and take the necessary precautions to protect their property. Please ensure:

• Sump pump is clear, in good working condition and has a backwater valve on it.
• Easy access to portable backup generator and pump.
• Downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 m from the dwelling.
• Securing items that might float away as flows increase.

Duration

This water safety statement is in effect until Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at 5 PM or until an update has been issued.
