WATERSHED CONDITIONS:
Downgrade to Flood Outlook

April 11th, 2025

SNC advises that the Flood Watch Statement of April 4th is being downgraded to a Flood Outlook. Water levels and flows have declined however, they remain elevated due to saturated soils and ongoing spring conditions.

Weather Forecast

Environment Canada is forecasting less than 10 mm of rainfall over the next week. Above zero temperatures are forecasted for
most of the week with daytime temperatures ranging between 0 and 16 degrees Celsius.

Environmental Conditions

Water levels and flows in rivers and streams across the jurisdiction have declined but remain elevated due to recent rainfall and snowmelt. Water levels are expected to continue to gradually decline, however, fast-flowing water and minor flooding in low-lying areas, floodplains, and poorly drained locations remain possible. These low-lying areas are commonly affected during the spring freshet.

Risks

The risk of widespread flooding has decreased; however, caution is still advised near all watercourses. Minor flooding may still occur in areas prone to poor drainage or those regularly impacted during spring runoff.

Action

Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when near rivers and waterbodies due to elevated flows and slippery conditions. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.

Residents in flood prone or low-lying areas, historically susceptible to flooding, should take the necessary precautions to protect their property. Please ensure:

  • Sump pump is clear, in good working condition and has a backwater
  • valve on it.
  • Easy access to portable backup generator and pump.
  • Downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 m from the dwelling.
  • Driveway culverts are clear of debris and drain well.
  • Securing items that might float away as flows increase.

Duration

This Flood Outlook Statement is in effect until April 18th, 2025 at 5 PM or until an update has been issued.

SNC monitors the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. Updates are provided as conditions change.

Flood Watch

April 4, 2025

Issued April 4, 2025

South Nation Conservation advises that a Flood Watch Statement is being extended in anticipation of additional snowmelt and rainfall in the upcoming week.

Weather Forecast

Environment Canada is forecasting approximately 35 mm of rainfall over the next week, with up to 20 mm forecasted on Saturday, and the potential for an additional 15 mm of rainfall by next Friday. Daytime temperatures will likely melt remaining snow adding additional runoff to local systems.

Environmental Conditions

The melting of snow and ice in combination with the forecasted rain beginning on Saturday can result in increased water levels and flows in local streams and rivers. Widespread flooding is not anticipated, however, fast flowing water and flooding of low-lying areas, floodplains, and areas with poor drainage is still possible. Low-lying areas are those that are regularly flooded during the spring freshet period. Water levels are expected to remain elevated through the week due to additional rainfall anticipated.

Risks

Rivers and streams across the jurisdiction may experience increases in water levels and flows and embankments may become unstable. Minor flooding is possible in low-lying areas and areas with poor drainage.

Action

Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when near rivers and waterbodies due to increasing river flows and slippery conditions. Any ice-covered bodies of water are considered unsafe. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.

Residents in flood prone or low-lying areas, historically susceptible to flooding, should take the necessary precautions to protect their property. Please ensure:

  • Sump pump is clear, in good working condition and has a backwater valve on it.
  • Easy access to portable backup generator and pump.
  • Downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 m from the dwelling.
  • Driveway culverts are clear of debris and drain well.
  • Securing items that might float away as flows increase.

Duration
